back-to-reality

It’s been a little while since my last post and that’s been for two reasons. First of all, my lovely girlfriend has been with me, looking after me, which meant I wanted to give her my full attention. However, another reason is that getting back to normal life, even without work, is amazingly tiring when one is post op!

The little bubble of life we lived in Thailand is nothing compared with real life. I felt that I was doing well when I left but reality quickly hit home! My journey home left me knocked for six, even with the wheelchair transfers which I’m so glad I ordered, and once home, I realised that the basics at home such as cooking, washing, taking the rubbish out and so on are a lot more on top of the load one has already, namely recovering and dilating three times a day.

I simply don’t know how I would have managed all of this were I to have come home from hospital straight after being released from hospital, as is the case with a lot of other surgeons. That three to four week stay in Thailand is a god-send when it comes to the recovery process and is a very valuable part of the experience I had. It gave me the means to easy myself back into day to day life when it would simply have been too much to have to do the normal things at home and I feel that has helped me to get to where I am now.

Well, now life goes on… Tomorrow, I return to work, though not in the office the whole day. For the time being, I’ll generally work from home in the mornings and the late afternoons so that I don’t overdo things and so that I have time to do my dilations (I just hope that nobody wants to do conf calls at those times since the lubricant makes some funny noises which would be difficult to explain!) The time I’ll be in the office will be busy, but I should be able to manage things to not overdo it.

When it comes down to it, I’m doing really well. The difference in tiredness between Thailand and home was a bit of a shock and I’m learning to listen to my body when I’ve done too much. The dilation is definitely a chore and a bit painful, especially with the tightening that happens in the second and third months, and I’m really, really looking forward to reducing to two dilations at the end of August and then one at the end of November. But, the most important thing is that this surgery has gone amazingly well, I feel fabulous in my ‘complete’ body, I’m recovering as expected and I’m being helped along the way by a fabulous girlfriend, caring family and supportive colleagues.

What more could I ask for?

Happy to see you are back home now where you can SLOWLY ease yourself back into the real world Emily. Those few weeks post-op at the hotel were certainly invaluable but as you say there is more convalescence to be had yet. I think three months should see you feeling much stronger, well as strong as you can be as a female! LOL. Take care and take it easy for a while. Love

Thanks, Shirley Anne! That ‘slowly’ bit is difficult for me and my girlfriend is continually hassling me to do things at the right pace! I do look forward to being more in form again, though, but I am feeling great in lots of ways! :)

Thank you, Chally! As for being tired, I think that’s nothing to really complain about six weeks after such major surgery… Life’s already fabulous and will just get fabulouser! :)
