I live in Strasbourg in Eastern France, a place of atmosphere on every street and lovely little corners which captivate me. There’s one place, however, which is more special for me than elsewhere, a little restaurant called l’Epicerie. Always full, it’s a buzzing, congenial place where one feels like one has stepped back 50 years upon entering.
A decor made up from tributes to this passed time would seem kitsch anywhere else, but the cabinets full of old medicines, food packaging and cooking implements just complete the cosy atmosphere and make one quickly comfortable. The seating is tight, but that adds to the cosiness of the place, as does the large table with benches going practically from one end of the room to the other where people who have never met may find themselves squashed next to each other, making it rather easy to make new friends!
The food’s interesting, too. It’s all about service traditional, excellent quality ingredients on top of coarse, tasty French bread. Whilst I’ve just described a sandwich, these are a meal of another order with flavours which are really to be enjoyed. Couple all of this with honest and interesting wines plus some terribly lovely desserts (the tarte aux noix is just wonderful) and you have a place which is really worth a visit.
A gay and trans-friendly restaurant is sometimes difficult to find, even in Strasbourg, but this is also a key feature of this place. Friendly staff make everyone comfortable and there really seems to be a willingness to do that bit extra to make sure that gay and trans folk fit in and enjoy this place.
I like this place a lot… If you’re visiting Strasbourg, I heartily recommend a long, relaxing lunch or dinner in this place!
